cheaper per acquired customer than paid advertising, once organic positions mature. That is the reason to do it — and the reason losing those positions hurts disproportionately.
Why positions decay
Nothing breaks. The environment simply moves:
- Competitors publish. Every useful page someone else publishes on your topic is a candidate to outrank yours.
- Google updates. Ranking systems change several times a year. Pages that satisfied last year's interpretation of a query may not satisfy this year's.
- Content ages. A page citing 2023 figures reads as stale to a reader and, increasingly, to the algorithm.
- Your site changes. Redesigns break internal links and redirects with remarkable consistency.
What ongoing work actually is
Legitimate monthly SEO is not mysterious. It is roughly four activities:
Technical maintenance
Crawl the site, fix what broke: dead links, redirect chains, pages accidentally blocked from indexing, Core Web Vitals regressions after a content update. Low glamour, high consequence.
Content that answers real queries
Find the questions your customers type before they are ready to buy, and answer them better than the current results do. This is the bulk of the work and the bulk of the return.
Refreshing what already ranks
Updating a page sitting at position 8 is usually worth more than publishing a new one. It already has authority; it just needs to be current and more complete than the pages above it.
Earning links
Slow, and the part most vulnerable to shortcuts. Bought links carry real risk of a penalty. Links earned because something you published was worth citing do not.
If your monthly report never mentions specific pages, specific queries, or specific changes made, you are being invoiced for the existence of a service rather than its delivery.
What to ask your provider
- Which pages did you change this month, and what did you change?
- Which queries moved, in which direction, and why do you think so?
- How many enquiries came from organic search, and how are you attributing them?
- What is the single biggest thing holding this site back right now?
A competent provider answers all four without preparation. The fourth question is the most revealing: someone actually working on your site always has an opinion.
The realistic commitment
For most small and mid-sized businesses, meaningful SEO is a twelve-month commitment before it becomes the cheapest channel you have. Treated as a three-month experiment, it reliably produces the conclusion that SEO does not work — having stopped precisely when it was about to.
Frequently asked
How long before SEO shows results?
Three to four months for meaningful movement on realistic terms, six to twelve for competitive ones. Anyone promising the first page in weeks is either targeting terms nobody searches or planning to break something.
Can I stop once I reach the top?
You can, and you will slide. Competitors keep publishing and Google keeps updating. Maintaining a position costs far less than winning it, but it is not zero.
What does an honest SEO report contain?
Positions for named keywords over time, organic traffic, and enquiries attributed to organic search. If the report is a list of tasks performed rather than outcomes, you are buying activity, not results.
Is technical SEO or content more important?
Technical problems set a ceiling; content decides how close to it you get. Fix the technical floor once, then the work is almost entirely content and links.
